Open Beta Diary: Ruling with an Iron Fist!

A couple of days ago, we released the first episode of our new open beta diary. We hope that all of you guys enjoyed reading Frank’s success story and you were able to draw some helpful conclusions on how to be a successful merchant. His story definitely kicked off a discussion about the most successful strategy in Forge of Empires here at InnoGames. You could easily distinguish the opposing sites into two main fractions: Those of us favoring the peaceful way of merchants and those of us, preferring to lead their troops into battle! Also a lot of stories from our players, forwarded to us daily via your.story@innogames.de, focused on those opposites. Therefore, we would like to introduce you to Philippe today, who rules his empire with an iron fist!

Salut and how are you? My name is Philippe and I play Forge of Empires on the French world Brisgard. I started with the game during closed beta and so far have reached the Late Middle Age. Most of my success comes through overpowering my opponents on the battlefield. I rarely use diplomacy to negotiate with other leaders, as most of the time they are no match for my troops. Due to my military strength, I would also consider myself to be very successful in PvP tournaments. And the medals I have won so far definitely reflect this. But of course, ruling by military strength does not only help me in the PvP tournaments, it is also an advantage in the single player campaign of the game. But my military power did not come by accident, as I developed this strategy a long time ago. Very early in the game I started solely researching new military buildings, leaving goods buildings almost untouched. Wasting my resources for minor technologies was also not in my interest. In order to boost my military growth, I started training my troops in multiple military buildings too. This often helped me to refresh my troops way faster than my opponents. Because of that, military defeats are not that devastating to me, as I always have a pool of defending units left in my city to attack my opponents. At the moment my army consists mainly of four longbow archers and four great sword warriors protecting them. This works exceptionally well for me as I know all the different skills of these units. While great sword warriors overpower opposing forces in melee combat, longbow archers attack them from long range. This is quite successful as most of my opponent’s troops are already defeated while trying to reach my units. You could call this style of play very defensive – I call it successful! Another thing that always helps me on the battlefield is to strategically use the environment to my advantage; taking cover behind bushes and forests often boosts the defense of units. But of course I am not going to tell you all of my tricks – some things you need to figure out by yourself ;)
