Swoją przygodę w Grepolis rozpoczynasz od małej polis, które z biegiem czasu przeobrażasz w wielkie miasto-państwo. Wznosząc swoje imperium, wybierasz spomiędzy 13 różnorodnych budynków i 8 monumentów. Są to między innymi kopalnie srebra, porty i obozy drwali. Co więcej, na odkrycie w akademii czeka ponad 30 technologii, które pozwalają skrócić czas budowy lub umożliwiają przeprowadzanie ataków na inne polis.
Oprócz pełnej swobody w rozbudowie miasta, gracz może w Grepolis wybrać jedno z kilku bóstw na swojego patrona. Hera może na przykład zwiększyć produkcję w twojej polis, a bóg mórz, Posejdon, osłabić flotę przeciwnika.
